Tuổi trẻ tài cao, học Business Analytics & Intelligent Systems được gì ?
Two and a half years ago, Zane Lim signed up for NUS-ISS’ Master of Technology in Knowledge Engineering
programme to switch from a design mechanical engineering career to one in business analytics. Today, he is graduating as the top student of his cohort and working as a Data Scientist at KPMG Singapore.
The digital economy in which Singapore is moving towards was what that first inspired Zane Lim to make a switch towards the intelligent systems and business analytics field.
“What drew me towards BA/Intelligent System the most is the ability to glean new knowledge/insights from vast amount of data and democratise the knowledge to the whole organisation (or even population) by implementing it in a system. It has the potential to revolutionise the way we work and improve the lives of millions of people,” said Zane.
Taking up the programme turned out to be the right move for Zane as it opened up a whole new world for him, “The programme really opened up my eyes to the world of business analytics and artificial intelligence, and it was a great experience learning about how various computational techniques can be applied to solve business problems.”
The NUS-ISS’ Master of Technology in Knowledge Engineering (KE) programme is specifically designed to help organisations achieve improved business outcomes through data insights, and is tailored for professionals seeking to practice at entry level, or for professionals seeking to move into specialist or expert positions in business analytics.
For Zane, he found the all-rounded learning structure of the programme helpful in picking up new skills and knowledge. “I enjoyed the blend of hands-on assignments, sharing of knowledge and experience, as well as learning about the industry’s best practices from guest lecturers, who are industry practitioners themselves,” said Zane.
It was the final year project though, that made the biggest difference for Zane.
Describing his final year project, Zane said, “My team mates and I came up with the idea to create an intelligent platform that provides an overview on the job market and skills in demand, as well as trend analysis, job recommendations and job matching based on public data. We were able to build a prototype with a recommendations engine and a front-end web application in over a year.”
It was not without challenges though. “Initially, we faced some difficulties in obtaining public data and consolidating our work. It didn’t help that we were trying to balance a full-time job and weekend classes at the same time,” Zane shared, “However, we were able to overcome these challenges by devoting more time in optimising our scraper, which required new data periodically, as well as made sure our work was version-controlled and tracked.”
“It also helped to have the full support of my wife,” Zane said with a smile.
In the time that he has spent in the programme, Zane has managed to attain a number of accomplishments. Apart from graduating as the top student and landing a dream job as Data Scientist at KPMG Singapore, he was also part of the winning team at the ISS-Knowesis Big Data Analytics Hackathon in 2014.
